MAY / JUNE 2018 21 living fit summer hikes / triathlon coaches Granite Mountain On the way up to the old fire lookout you'll gain about 1,000 feet of elevation per mile. The alpine experience and dis- tant views, including of Mount Rainier, make every step worthwhile. August 25 11 miles July 14 8.6 miles September 8 12 miles July 28 9 miles September 22 13.8 miles August 11 11 miles New triathlon coaches With triathlon season upon us, two new coaches will guide WAC endurance athletes through practice and rac- ing. Jill Reinauer, a USA Triathlon Level I certified coach, will lead most bike and run workouts. Jill has competed in the Ironman World Championships and Ironman 70.3 World Championships, and she began competitive run- ning in high school. She enjoys helping triathletes new to the sport as well as those looking to trim time from their personal best. Joining Jill is WAC member Erik Ness, a top-level age-group triathlete. Erik started his triathlon career as a 15-year-old growing up in the Bay Area. His coaching expertise focuses on swimming and biking, and his early morning pool workouts have quickly become a favorite for WAC members looking to improve their speed and stroke. Erik has competed in the Ironman 70.3 World Championships. For more information on group and personal triathlon training and the WAC Tri/Cycle Club, see page 53 or email tricycleclub@wac.net. McClellan Butte Enjoy old-growth trees and lush forest during this challenging climb that ends with an optional scramble to the true summit. Mount Defiance This trek offers views along much of the way to the 5,584-foot summit. Be ready for a beautiful (and hot!) day on the trail. Red Mountain The first and last 2.5 miles take you along the Pacific Crest Trail. At this time of year, you might even meet some through-hikers nearing the end of their long journey. Kendall Katwalk Challenge your vertigo with a walk along the narrow path carved out of a steep cliff face. Also uses the Pacific Crest Trail. Mount Teneriffe A longer and less crowded alternative to Mount Si, this trek will leave you gaping with its Mount Rainier vistas. B R I A N F R A N C I S C O U R T E S Y J I L L R E I N A U E R
