{BUZZ} Memories: 1951– 1952 By Dee Sanwick, History Committee Chair MAN OF THE YEAR At the annual dinner to honor the city's sports "Man of the Year," our Royal Brougham, sports editor of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, awarded the title and trophy to Stan Sayres, owner of the record-breaking hydroplane, Slo-Mo-Shun. HENRY FONDA A WAC theater party included dinner at the Club, tickets to the play Mister Roberts starring Henry Fonda, and an after-show reception back at the WAC—which Fonda and other actors attended. Members enjoyed the entire evening for $9.50 per person, and the event sold out. REMEMBERING WAR While the WAC made up for lost time with parties and other entertainment often forgone during World War II, members didn't easily forget the war effort. General Mark Clark, one of the war's outstanding leaders, spoke at a luncheon cosponsored by the 101 Club. His topic was "Building Our Army to Meet Future Aggression." The men-only event drew a capacity crowd. WELCOME THE KING The coronation of Seafair's King Neptune III took place at the WAC. TRUMP THIS Charles H. Goren, the nation's top- ranking bridge player and a syndicated columnist, was to conduct a bridge clinic after the opening luncheon of the bridge season. The women's event cost $2 per person. Great time. Great Wheel! in circles isn't always a bad thing. Just ask anyone who's ridden the Seattle Great Wheel since its opening earlier this summer. Long- time WAC member Hal Griffith and his sons—Kyle and Troy, also Club members— brought the city's newest attraction to Pier 57. During a ride in early July, the skyline and Olympic Mountains captured our attention—and the tiny spectators below kept us on the edge of our seats. Lie on your back with your arms back/overhead and legs forward. Raise arms toward ceiling then roll up your spine one vertebra at a time until your arms are reaching forward toward your feet. 2. Roll back down to the floor again, one vertebra at a time. Note: While reaching forward, pull your belly button toward your spine to further work the core. If you have neck/shoulder/lower back issues, hook ankles under a strap or bend knees with feet flat on floor. The soft tannins complement the fruit nicely with a smooth mouth feeling. The finish leaves you with a lingering and light hint of vanilla. DISCOVERY: Most people think of white wine when they think of a picnic or grilling outside. The warmer weather undoubtedly makes you reach for something cool and refreshing. Some of us, on the other hand, like to be a bit unconventional and won't hesitate to enhance a rustic picnic with a bottle of this complex wine. The layers of flavor pair well with many summer favorites, such as grilled meats and pasta salads. Or try it with a wild berry sauce on a sundae. If you are more of a traditionalist, I recommend pairing this fabulous bottle with the herbaceous and delicious mint pesto-crusted lamb chops on Torchy's dinner menu. But stop in soon—at 10 years old, this wine is at its best right now. 2 —Bettina Stix is a member of the WAC Wine Club and a Level 1 Sommelier. LUKE RUTAN BARBARA KINNEY
