C O U R T E S Y U N I V E R S I T Y O F P O R T L A N D , K R I S TA S E R I A N N I ( I N S E T ) Moneyball By Darrick Meneken MEET THE ATHLETE Kari Luttinen has been a WAC member since birth. Her parents, Scott and Kristin, joined the WAC in 1989. During her freshman year at Seattle Prep, Kari began training with WAC basketball coach Donald Watts. As her skills improved, college recruiters took note. She earned a full-ride to the University of Portland, where she recently graduated with a finance degree. What are some of your favorite WAC memories? I grew up with the WAC. I learned how to swim here and how to play basketball here. My dad and I went to the Father Daughter Banquet almost every year. Do you have a typical workout? My workout varies. When I was younger, I used Women's Fitness and the pool a lot. On court, I do a lot of shooting and skill work. What I like best is pickup basketball games. You play shooting guard. What's your favorite part of the game? I love the competition. I'm a competitive person. The fast pace of basketball matches my personality. What do you think is the sport's biggest challenge? A difficult match-up against another player. It's a lot of fun playing against someone bigger or with a different skill set than you have. You just graduated from college. Any plans? I'm potentially playing overseas in Europe this fall. But I'm also doing a bit of job- hunting here in the states, as well. What advice do you have for kids looking to improve their game? You need dedication. Set ambitious goals for yourself and work toward them with everything you do. 56 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | AUGUST 2015 Private Swim Lessons The WAC aquatics team offers lessons designed to suit anyone's needs.
