34 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | APRIL / MAY 2015 F amily Fun Night was a hit. "All we heard was praise," WAC Event Coordinator Mary Ellen Jilek says. "Members keep telling us they want more family events, and Family Fun Night seems to be a great addition." e event packed the 8th Floor with bounce houses, board games, a coloring station, Wii, Ping-Pong, open gym, and a spaghetti dinner. If you happened upon the floor's racquetball courts, Sports Café, or gym during the event, you might have thought you were in the wrong place. Unless, of course, you were one of the more than 150 kids and parents attending the first Family Fun Night, held this past January. Although Family Fun Night is a new event—the next one is slated for May 8— there's nothing new about family fun at the WAC. "We've always offered events for kids and families, and we're thrilled with our members' consistent sup- port," Club Programs Vice Pres- ident Melissa Borders says. "Our current efforts are a response to their requests for even more." Consider this: At present, the WAC counts more than 1,650 members below age 18. WAC members with children on their account will soon receive an email survey asking about how they use the Club and what additions they might like to see. Please share your thoughts as we continue to grow our junior and family programs. Of those, 850 are under age 12. Creating programs for these members not only delivers what they want now, but it also helps cultivate the Club's next generation. "Junior members are the future of the Club," Senior Vice President Athletics, Special Projects & Community Partners Wayne Milner says. Knowing that, the WAC's Athletics and Club Programs departments have teamed to develop fun, educational, and fitness-oriented opportunities for WAC kids. ose programs should also grab the attention of a growing population of young downtown families. Late last year, the Downtown Seattle Association reported a 17 percent increase in the population of children living downtown since 2010.
