20 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | JUNE / JULY 2014 A slam dunk for Platinum Masters team in San Francisco WAC team wins national basketball title for the third time J ust a few weeks after March Madness ended, several WAC members kept the basketball fever alive at the 2014 North American Association of Club Athletic Directors (NACAD) Basketball Tournament. Hosted by the Olympic Club in San Francisco, the tournament took place over three days at the end of April. For the third time in as many years, the WAC Platinum Masters team won the national title. Platinum teams consist of players ages 60 and up. e 10-player WAC team included members participating in their 20th tournament as well as one member participating for the first time. e team physically battled with teams from the Olympic Club and the Multnomah Athletic Club of Portland during the weekend tournament. With bruised hips, sprained ankles and sore calves, the players used lots of ice to get through the third day. In the final game against the Multnomah club, the WAC Platinum men had an early lead and never trailed. e final score was 48–37. Seven WAC teams participated in this year's tournament. e WAC Women's team took home the second place title after a tough loss to the Olympic Club team. is annual NACAD competition, which includes ten clubs from around the country, has taken place since 1986. WAC teams have brought home 28 titles in that time.
