We caught up with Gary a few days before his trip and again with five days before Williamsburg. You trained for this ride for more than a year. How? training was hard. When i started, i upped my bike hours to 10 hours a week and then to 20. it's sort of like having a part-time job. i attend weekly spinning classes at the Club and ride as much as possible outdoors. You were on the road for a month. What were the days like? i woke up at 5 am every morning, packed my bike gear and computer, ate a big breakfast, and was on the road when the sun rose. We rested quickly about every two hours. Our days ended around 4 pm. then it's dinner and bedtime. What were some of the biggest challenges? you're equally tired every day. i also had to wrap my ankle every day and ice it at night. Some people had to take a few rest days to get through injury. i stayed true to my goal to ride every mile until the end. What did you enjoy most about this experience? aside from seeing the u.S. in the best way possible, i also made 40 new friends from all over the country. the fun parts of the trip make up for the difficult parts. You're 61 years old. How do you feel? My doctor says he's never seen me so fit. 44 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | OCTOBER 2013 GrOup trAininG Group training offers most of the benefits of personalized training as well as the camaraderie and competitive spirit of a group dynamic.
