14 WAC Magazine | wac.net Bedtime stories Member and doctor publishes sleep book written in part at the Club Studying sleep wasn't always member Brandon Peters' dream. He was certain he wanted to be a doctor, but didn't get interested in the subject of sleep until he spent a college summer working in a sleep clinic. It was there that he began to recognize the importance of sleep. "As a concept, it's a bit of black box because you don't know much about what's going on once you're asleep, but we all have to do it," says Dr. Peters, who joined the WAC in 2017. He recently published his second book on the subject. "e Sleep Apnea Hy- pothesis" is a compilation of his articles written over more than 15 years. With an abundance of content to work from, Dr. Peters spent a significant amount of time editing, oen working from "1930" on the lobby level of the WAC. As a full-time sleep physician at Vir- ginia Mason and a dad to two small chil- dren, he oen escaped to the light-filled space for inspiration. e book offers an approachable read about sleep apnea—a condition that causes breathing to stop or become drastically shallow during sleep—and how it can impact health and well-being when le untreated. "ere's a lot of things we associate just with general aging— like sleepiness, daytime fatigue, insomnia, peeing at night, high blood pressure, and diabetes—that can oen be linked back to untreated sleep apnea," Dr. Peters says. Dr. Peters is already working on a follow-up book with a focus on the cures for sleep apnea. first take dan evans / member author We lost a great one this past September when WAC member and three-term Washington state governor Dan Evans passed away at age 98. Evans remains the youngest person ever elected to lead our state. He served as governor from 1965–1977 and as a U.S. senator from 1983–1989. "For many, many years the WAC was an important focal point for my dad," Dan Evans Jr., one of Gov. Evans' three sons, said via email. "From the TV he won in the 1950s at Jubilee, the Toast- masters classes he took before running for governor to improve his speaking skills, or as a great place to gather, he loved the WAC." Dan Evans Sr. graduated from Roosevelt High School in Northeast Seattle in 1943 and enlisted in the Navy. Following World War II, he earned bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Washington and started his career as a structural engineer in Seattle. During the Korean War, he re- turned to the service as a lieutenant on a Navy destroyer. He joined the WAC shortly aer his Seattle homecoming in 1953. "He fully embodied every value of the WAC—leadership, excellence, integ- rity, service, and sensitivity," WAC Pres- ident & CEO Chuck Nelson says. "His contribution to civic life in the state of Washington is perhaps unmatched. And his commitment to a greater good lasted through his final days." Evans was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1956. He served four terms before running for governor in 1964, a race he won by a landslide, including 57 percent of the vote in King County. e Seattle Times reported that the last political contest Evans lost was for Roosevelt High junior class president. "We are proud to have had him as a WAC member and felt honored every time he was in the Clubhouse," Chuck says. Evans was born in Seattle on October 16, 1925. In 1959, he married Nancy Ann Bell, who died this past January at age 90. Nancy and Dan Evans are survived by their three sons, Dan, Mark, and Bruce, as well as nine grandchildren. "High on the list of his perfect days was his Monday routine for years of attending CDRT [Seattle Chamber of Commerce's Community Development Round Table], followed by a workout and a massage at the WAC," Evans Jr. said. "Simple pleasures." e Washington Athletic Club sends our condolences and gratitude to the Evans family.
