Celebrating
college rugby's
best
e Sorensen & Scholz Collegiate Rug-
by Player of the Year awards ceremony
and banquet returns to the Crystal
Ballroom on Saturday, June 8. Join
the celebration to recognize this year's
winners, Wyatt Parry of BYU and Freda
Tafuna of Lindenwood University.
Parry led his team to two straight D1A
semifinal appearances. Tafuna earned
her first cap with USA Rugby during the
2023 Pacific Four Series.
United States Rugby Hall of Famer
Tara Flanagan will be this year's guest
speaker—Flanagan played lock on the
1991 Team USA women's team, which
won the first-ever women's World Cup.
e annual banquet honors the
nation's best college rugby players. e
selection process begins with rugby play-
ers across the country voting to select
three finalists from a group of nominees.
Final selection of the winners is then de-
cided by a panel of college coaches and
members of the rugby community.
Named aer rugby legend, world
champion, and U.S. Rugby Hall of
Famer Maryanne "MA" Sorensen—who
also was a member of the 1991 Team
USA squad—the MA Sorensen Award
is given to the country's top women's
player. e top men's player receives
the Rudy Scholz Award—named aer
Olympic gold medalist and U.S. Rugby
Hall of Famer Rudolph Scholz.
Attend the ceremony and dinner
on Saturday, June 8, in the Crystal
Ballroom. Tickets are $60 and avail-
able on the WAC app. Guests welcome.
