FALL / WINTER 2023 31 living fit instructor insights Pilates 101 "Firstly, Pilates isn't just exercise," Anna says. Instead, think of it as a set of instructions for how to use your body more optimally. "Pilates improves bio- mechanics, lessens chronic pain in joints and muscles, and more," she says. "It makes you feel 'more free' in your body." Pilates also helps bridge the gap between body and mind, providing a holistic ap- proach that can be applied to nearly all types of movement. "e benefits don't stop in the studio," Anna says. "Pilates enriches you for life." Pilates vs. yoga e difference is approach, Anna says. While yoga and Pilates employ similar exercises, Pilates focuses on dynamic movements and repetition with the intent of physical rehabilitation. "Using the cobra pose as an example—in yoga, the emphasis is on holding the stretch; in Pilates, the focus is on strengthening the middle back," Anna says. Do I have to be fit already? "No and no!" Anna says, emphatically. Anyone can benefit from Pilates, regard- less of their fitness level. Alleviate pain "Chronic pain is oen a sign of imbal- ance," Anna says. "Pilates encourages better biomechanics and can provide the knowledge needed to keep chronic pain at bay for life. Clients can experience pain relief as soon as their first session!" Where to start For clients dealing with nagging ail- ments, it's best to seek private instruction for a tailored approach, Anna says. For those without chronic pain, Pilates class- es at the WAC, including Pilates Mat and Pilates FLO, can offer an introduction. "No matter what you choose, building a foundation of knowledge is what's most important," Anna says.
