"It was my parents that instilled my sense of leaving a place better than when you found it," Pete says. "I've always had a strong interest in pouring myself back into places where I've felt helped and welcomed." Family is everything for Laurel and Pete, both University of Washington alumni who joined the WAC in 1990, the same year they married. "When I first met Laurel, I asked her out and she declined. We didn't see each other for four years until we met again at an event," Pete says with a smile. "Ten days aer that, we were engaged." All four of their adult children— Kathryn, 32; Andrew, 31; and twins Sarah and Christopher, 28—also earned their degrees from UW. Sarah also played goalkeeper for the women's Honoring a pair of WAC Foundation Founders Members Laurel and Pete Shimer reciprocate the warmth they've always felt at the Club u WAC Foundation Founders Laurel and Pete Shimer on the University of Washington campus.
